An uplifting tale! November 27, 2007 'Gator Creek' by Carol Overstreet tells of the well-known Overstreet name, the people who have carried it and of the reason we should hold them in such high esteem.
The book tells the story of the Overstreet family from the 1800s to present. The Overstreet family have been major cattlemen for generations and have had major landholdings all across Central Florida.
It was odd for me to go from one book, 'White Shadow', focussing on the life of Charlie Wall, gangster and all around bad egg, to Charlie Overstreet, just the opposite. Oddly their parents were very similar. It was very much like looking at what might have happened to one person depending on the direction they took.
Unfortunately, this book is going to be tough to find except here. Though, I do urge you to see if your library has it if you live in Florida. Mrs. Overstreet could've used an editor and there are too many loose ends. I admit the book is frustrating in that way. However, it is a great tale - Very uplifting - of people and their practical and realistic approach to the ups and downs of life. I wish children were made to read this to read what hard work is all about.
Brings the true Florida to everyone's livingroom May 15, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It is always refreshing to nestle oneself into a good story, not one that relies on sensational events almost beyond belief, but captures the imagination and interest of the reader though the ability to make history come alive and stand on its own merit.
Carol has told her family story in a way that brings you into their struggles, happiness and sorrows. She takes the reader though tragedies, strife and shows that with determination and patience everything will work out.
I highly reccomend it, and would dare make it required reading so that those who have come to our state can realize that us 'crackers' did not live in a paradise with mickey mouse down the road, but this land was hard won, through the blood and sweat of those who came before us.
Vivid, Colorful Florida History December 7, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Gator Creek is the true story of Overstreet's husband's family. The Orlando Sentinel describes it as "starting with a cattle-rustling incident in the 1920s, flashing back to the Civil War era, going through the dark days when the man she later married became a paraplegic, and up to the point where her mother-in-law had just been buried." The review calls it a "compelling saga of Florida's ranching way of life - from the days right after the Second Seminole War through the days of the open range..." Overstreet has a new book out now called Water Under the Bridge.
Gator Creek a Great First Book August 4, 2004 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Carol Overstreet's Gator Creek enables readers of Florida history and Southern literature to hear, smell, feel and taste the gritty history of cattle ranching in Central Florida. Her loving and often humorous retelling of Polk County's Overstreet family history makes the hardscrabble existence of cattle ranching prior to 1950 come alive with truly memorable "cracker" characters. A must read for anyone interested in Florida history or cattle ranching.
